BOTOX® has become a state of the art approach to treating unappealing, frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet. We know that repetitive motion or contraction of the underlying muscles causes facial wrinkles. However, with the advent of BOTOX®’s use in a quick and relatively painless procedure, most patients are completely satisfied with the results and return for treatment 2-3 times per year for it’s immediate results as well as it’s benefits on an anti-aging appearance.
BOTOX® is the brand of botulinum toxin type A, and has been used to treat over 900,000 patients worldwide for more than 11 years. BOTOX® is injected into the affected muscles where you experience the most wrinkling, through a small needle; thus producing a protein that blocks the releases of acetylcholine, relaxes the muscles, and decreases the muscle contraction. The injection may cause minor, temporary discomfort. BOTOX® usually starts working in about 3-5 days and the treatment can last about 3-6 months. These treatments can be repeated as long as your condition responds to BOTOX® and you do not have any serious allergic reactions. Very few side effects may occur including a temporary headache, slight bruising at injection site, and possible ptosis (drooping).
Recent approval by the FDA supports the claims of numerous clinical studies that the “drug is safe and effective for wrinkle reduction”. BOTOX® is a proven method to smooth and eliminate facial wrinkling expression lines, central frown lines, and lessens crow’s feet. It can even help with muscle spasms, and possibly even migraine headaches. Further research on this is being done. Although the FDA has approved this product for use, it is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women. Beware of those who claim BOTOX® will give a significant face lift, this is stretching the truth, but it will soften wrinkles, prevent the progression of wrinkles and delay or be done as an alternative to other cosmetic surgical procedures in many patients.
